Born at Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, 11 September 1842, son of Hopkin Bevan and Eliza (Davies) - the father was a Bevan of Llangyfelach, related to Hopkin Bevan, the mother a descendant of Lewis Rees. He was educated at University College School and New College, London (B.A., LL.B.). From 1865 to 1869 he was assistant to Dr. Thomas Binney at the King's Weigh-house, and from 1869 to 1876 pastor of Whitefield's Tabernacle, London. After a pastorate (1876-82) in New York, he returned to minister (1882-6) at Highbury Quadrant, but then removed to Collins Street, Melbourne, spending the rest of his life in Australia : 1886-1910 at Melbourne, and 1910-18 as principal of Parkin Independent College, Adelaide. He was married and had five children. He died 9 August 1918.
Fourth son of Llewelyn David Bevan. He was a professor of physics at the Royal Holloway College; his career and work are described by T. Iorwerth Jones in "The contributions of Welshmen to science" , Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion , 1932-3, 54-6.
