Born at Dôl Hywel in the parish of Llangadfan, Montgomeryshire, a grandson of William Jones (1726 - 1795), of that place, who in his day was well-known as a scholar. During the greater part of his life he was a schoolmaster. He was also a local preacher with the Wesleyans.
His bardic name was Ieuan Cadfan. He published two volumes of poems - mainly carols and poems on religious themes. One of these volumes was Yr Odlydd Cysurus, cyfaill i'r trallodus yn cynnwys amrywiol ddyriau, cofiant am amrai anwylion…carolau…emynau, etc., 1839, published by H. Jones, Llanrwst. He died at Llanerfyl on 3 April 1855 and was buried there.
