CYNLLO (fl. 550?), saint

is an example of the monastic founder of whose history nothing is known, but who had local importance over a wide region. His name does not occur in the older texts of ' Bonedd y Saint,' but he was the patron of Nantmel, Llangynllo, Llanbister, and (probably) Rhayader in Radnorshire, and of Llangynllo and Llangoedmor in Cardiganshire When to these churches are added their chapels, it will be seen that his sway extended over almost the whole of Gwerthrynion and Maelienydd; his predominance is not so marked in south Cardiganshire, but even here Llangoedmor was the mother church of an area which at one time probably included Cardigan. Llanbister was even more important and in 1291 was one of the three richest churches in the diocese. Cynllo's day was 17 July; the festival is mentioned by Lewis Glyn Cothi as specially celebrated at Rhayader.
