Born near Llansawel, Carmarthenshire; his age when he entered Carmarthen in 1783 is given as 19. He left the Academy in 1785, and was ordained minister of Llan-y-bri. From 1795 to 1813 he shared the teaching at Carmarthen with David Peter, but charges of immorality brought against him, though not proven, brought his career there to an end; and though he continued in the pastorate of Llan-y-bri, his relations with his congregation had been unsettled; indeed the majority left the church to found another at Capel Newydd. He was also regarded by strict Calvinists as unorthodox. He died 27 November 1828 - he fell from his horse into a brook near Rhyd-y-gors, and was drowned. He had been twice married.
