renowned in his day for his wit and originality. There is a 'biography' of him, by George Jones (Wrexham, 1907), very deficient in dates and other particulars. It would seem that he was brought up at Mold, though his family hailed from Nerquis, Flintshire; he was received into Mold Methodist society in 1815 'when 16 years of age' (G. Owen, Methodistiaeth Sir Fflint, 323), and according to his mourning-card he was '79' when he died (Y Cylchgrawn, 1879, 135-6 ), so he must have been born in 1799 or 1800, and not in 1808 as some have it. He began preaching in 1822 and was ordained in 1834; he was a very remarkable preacher, and published, 1869, a commentary on the Book of Proverbs, which had a great vogue. One fact should be mentioned, which suggests that his political views were more advanced than were those of many Methodist ministers before the middle of the 19th century - he favoured the agitation in 1841 for the repeal of the Corn Laws (see Cylchgrawn Rhyddid, 1 January 1842). He died 5 March 1879.
