Born at Tre-boeth (Swansea) 10 May 1803. He was a collier, and a member of Mynydd-bach church. Having begun preaching in 1828, he was in 1831 (though he had had little education) ordained minister at Llantrisant. From July 1836 till April 1840 he was pastor of the churches of Ebenezer (Mill Street, Aberdare) and Nebo (Hirwaun); but in 1840 was called to the pastorate of his own old church at Mynydd-bach, then in a deplorable state in consequence of the troubles caused by his predecessor Isaac Harding Harries : Davies in time brought it into good order. His stipend was small, and he had a large family, so he undertook the management of a colliery, in which he died from the effects of choke-damp 6 September 1854. He was a diligent writer; among his works may be mentioned Arch y Cyfamod, 1840, and his additions to the 2nd (1852) edition of the biography of Lewis Rees by John Roberts of Llanbrynmair. But one cannot omit reference to the sermon which he delivered in Ebenezer chapel (Aberdare) on 9 September 1839 to the 'Moral Force Chartists,' and at their own request; it was published in the same year by T. Price (Merthyr Tydfil), and is an interesting exposition of the moderate Radicalism of Welsh Congregationalist leaders of that period. His son, David Stephen Davies, is separately noticed.
