Born 29 June 1834 at Carneddi near Bethesda, Caernarfonshire, son of David Roberts. He delighted in music while still a child and made up his mind to master the art. Robert Moses, the instructor of the Carneddi Choral Society, gave him his first lessons, and Eos Llechid (O. H. Davies) taught him harmony and composition, in which he made such good progress that by the time he was 16 he had already composed several airs and anthems and had won prizes at the eisteddfodau. He composed about a dozen anthems in all. His anthem ' Dyn a aned o wraig ' was published and was frequently sung as a funeral dirge in the quarrying districts of North Wales until the beginning of the 20th century. He was killed by a fall of rock at Cae-braich-y-cafn quarry, 29 August 1858, and was buried in Llanllechid cemetery.
