DYKINS, WILLIAM (Dirwynydd; 1831 - 1872), poet and prose-writer

Born at Maes Glas (Greenfield) near Holywell, Flintshire, 8 December 1831. He was brought up in the English Independent church of Alpha, Holywell, but as a young man became a Wesleyan and was a member of that denomination at Holywell, Maes Glas, and Ffynnon Groyw. A pious man who had experienced the fervour of a religious revival, his interest in literature and music was profound. He was a choir conductor, a precentor at Pendref, Holywell, and it was said of him that 'he constantly sought to be of some service, especially in connection with the singing.' In the latter years of his life several of his poems, in both the classical and modern forms, were published in Y Winllan and the Eurgrawn Wesleaidd - generally, on religious subjects. Articles written by him are also found in the same periodicals. He suffered constant ill health in the last ten years of his life and died 25 December 1872. He was buried at Holywell.
