Born at Dolgelley. He was a shoemaker by trade. He was taught the elements of music by John Williams (Ioan Rhagfyr, 1740 - 1821); when the latter died Richard Ellis succeeded him as precentor at S. Mary's church, Dolgelley. He is said to have collected psalm-tunes and published them in a small volume. He composed several hymn-tunes and anthems. Few collections of hymn-tunes omit the hymn-tune ' Hyder,' 8.7.4, composed by Ellis in 1824. He died 11 February 1855 and was buried in the old churchyard, Dolgelley.
