HAINES, WILLIAM (1853 - 1922), local historian and bibliographer

Born 24 May 1853, at Bryn, Penpergwm, Monmouthshire, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Haines. Educated at the grammar school, Abergavenny, he became a solicitor's clerk. He married (1) 1876, Clara Ann Rutherford (died 1880), of Rockhampton, Gloucestershire, and (2) Mary Nicholas (died 1944) of Llangibby, Monmouth, who shared her husband's literary interests. Haines collected an extensive library of books, manuscripts, documents, etc., relating to Monmouthshire; the bulk of this collection was acquired by Sir Garrod and lady Thomas and presented to the Newport borough library in January 1924. He also compiled a bibliography of printed and other literature relating to Monmouthshire. This work was submitted for competition at the Pontypool national eisteddfod in 1933 but remains unpublished, being now preserved in the National Library of Wales in ten manuscript volumes (NLW MS 7541E , NLW MS 7542E , NLW MS 7543E , NLW MS 7544E , NLW MS 7545E , NLW MS 7546E , NLW MS 7547E , NLW MS 7548E , NLW MS 7549E , NLW MS 7550E ) the gift of his widow. With this material are preserved six other Haines manuscripts (NLW MS 7551B , NLW MS 7552B , NLW MS 7553-7554B , NLW MS 7555B , NLW MS 7556B ), containing letters received by him from other bibliographers and men of letters (for a list of the writers see N.L.W. Handlist of MSS., xi) when he was compiling the bibliography. He died 12 January 1922 and was buried at Llangattock-juxta-Usk, near Abergavenny.
