Born 16 September 1747 at Nantllymystyn, Llansantffraid, Radnorshire, the son of John and Winifred Harries. A hymn-tune called ' Babell ' by him which did not get the prize at the Welshpool eisteddfod of 1824 was included in Caniadau Seion (Mills), whilst a Christmas carol composed to the words ' Cyduned pob Cristion ' was printed in Cerddor y Cymry. His anthem, ' Par i mi wybod dy ffyrdd,' arranged by John Roberts (Ieuan Gwyllt) for Y Cerddor Cymreig, nos. 82-3 was popular until about the beginning of the 20th century; it appeared also in Llyfr Anthemau a Salmdonau (Alaw Ddu). In 1824 he went to live with a daughter at Carno where he died 6 January 1834; he was buried in Carno churchyard.
