Born 2 June 1805 at Dolwyddelan, brother of John Jones of Tal-y-sarn (1796 - 1857). Before beginning to preach in 1826 he had had no education except that given at the Sunday school. Afterwards he went to the school kept by John Hughes (1796 - 1860) at Wrexham. After coming to live at Caernarvon in 1832 he married Mrs. Owen of Siop-y-pendist. He was ordained in 1834 and ministered to Moriah as well as to other churches in the town (1832-58). From 1858 to 1867 he lived at Treborth. He died 23 June 1868, at Llanfairfechan, where he had been staying for a few months.
He had an aristocratic dignity and courtesy, and was regarded as being in the front rank of preachers; his ministry was not as spectacular as his brother's but his preaching is said to have been more consistent, and his colourful message was highly effective. Much of his work in prose and verse has been published, chiefly in Y Drysorfa and the Traethodydd. His principal works were: in prose, Perffaith Gyfraith Rhyddid (1862), and in verse, Dyn, yn ei Greadigaeth, ei Ddirywiad, a'i Adferiad yn y dyn Crist Iesu (1867). Several of his hymns are well known. Two volumes of his sermons were published in 1876.
