JONES, EVAN (Gwrwst ab Bleddyn Flaidd, or more often Gwrwst, 1793 - 1855), Baptist minister and littérateur

Born at Llanddoget, Denbighshire, 26 August 1793. He began to preach when he was 18 years old, and became missionary to Llŷn and Eifionydd in 1815. He was ordained at Garn Dolbenmaen, 25 November 1817, and moved in 1820 to Llangollen, in 1822 to Dolgelley, and in September 1823 to Castleton, Monmouth, where he remained until his death on 1 December 1855. In 1824 he married Mary Morgan, Maesyfelin, S. Lythans, and twelve children were born of the marriage. His ministry at Castleton was very successful, the number of members increasing, branches being established at S. Mellons in 1833, and S. Brides, Wentloog, in 1838, and several members including J.R. Morgan (Lleurwg), becoming ministers of religion. He was friendly with some of the most prominent literary men of his day, such as Robert Williams (Robert ap Gwilym Ddu) and David Owen (Dewi Wyn o Eifion), and was an active member of the Cymreigyddion Society at Dolgelley. He published Gwentwyson: sef Ymdrechfa Y Beirdd; neu Awdlau Galarnadol am … Y Parch. Thomas Price (Carnhuanawc), 1849, and the translation of Traethawd ar Faddeuant Pechod, 1809, by Abraham Booth is attributed to him, although he was then but a youth (see under Evan Jones, (1777 - 1819). Robert Ellis (Cynddelw) won a prize given by the Ivorite Society at Castleton for an awdl in his memory, May 1856.
