Born at Llanasa, Flintshire. At 8 years old, he worked in a cotton-mill at Holywell. About 1804 he went to sea; was serving in the Royal Navy in 1805, and remained in it till 1814; he read much while at sea. He then returned to the Holywell mill, but removed in 1820 to a factory at Stalybridge. There, he eked out his scanty wage by printing edifying verse (in English), such as metrical paraphrases of Aesop, and selling his works in the market. In 1856, he published a small book of them, Poems by John Jones. He died 19 June 1858; Ceiriog and Creuddynfab were present at his funeral.
