Born July 1840 at Mydrim, Carmarthenshire. He received his early education at the village school and under Alcwyn C. Evans at Carmarthen. When he was 13 years of age he was apprenticed to a draper in Carmarthen for five years, during which time he adopted Baptist principles. He entered Carmarthen Presbyterian College in 1860, and after four years there, went to Glasgow University. In 1870 he entered Regent's Park College, but in February 1871 was appointed tutor at the Baptist College at Pontypool. He was elected principal of that college in 1877, but lost his health and died in Switzerland 18 October 1880.
