LLOYD, WILLIAM (1771 - 1841), Methodist cleric

Born in 1771, son of Robert and Elinor Lloyd of Pen-y-maes, Nevin, Caernarfonshire; his father had a small estate in Llannor. He was educated at ysgol ramadeg Botwnnog and Jesus College, Oxford; ordained in 1801, and licensed to Rhoscolyn, Llanfair yn Neubwll, and Llanfihangel, Anglesey. It was not long before he joined the Methodists; [and he was deprived in 1805 in consequence]. He lived for a time at Caernarvon and Nevin; then, kept a school at Brynaerau, near Clynnog, after which, in 1817, he went to Caernarvon to keep another school. There he spent the rest of his life, exercising great influence among the Methodists of North Wales for, although he was not a great preacher, his piety was recognised. He was one of the few clergymen of the Established Church,three only in North Wales - Lloyd, Thomas Charles, and Simon Lloyd, who remained faithful to the Methodists after the 1811 ordination. He died 10 April 1841, and was buried in Llanbeblig churchyard; [the statement on his tombstone that he was a Fellow of Jesus finds no corroboration either in Foster or in the list of Fellows in Hardy, Jesus College ].
