MEREDITH, ROBERT (1823 - 1893), printer of Welsh books and music in the U.S.A.

Born 23 September 1823 in Y Ffynnon, Blaenau Ffestiniog, son of Robert Meredith (afterwards the Rev. Robert Meredith, Holland Patent, N.Y.). He emigrated to America in 1831, lived in Utica, N.Y., and afterwards in Marcy, near Holland Patent. He received his education at the Holland Patent Academy, and was apprenticed to E. E. Roberts, printer, Utica. In 1848 he went to New York to print Y Cyfaill. Afterwards he moved to Rome, N.Y., where he set up his own printing press at which he printed Y Cyfaill for a period of ten years. He moved to Racine, Wisconsin, in 1861, and, in 1863, to Chicago, where, in conjunction with his two sons, he set up a press at which music could be printed. Among the Welsh books which he printed are Y Pregethwr a'r Gwrandawr, 1855, Y Drysorfa Gerddorol, 1856, and Blodau Paradwys, the last containing hymns and tunes for Sunday School use - the music by Sankey and the words translated into Welsh by Meredith. In 1858 he began to publish Yr Arweinydd (Rome, N.Y.). Adgofion o'r Amser Gynt was printed in 1885-6. He died 20 July 1893 at Chicago.
