Born at Llanelly 7 July 1842. He was baptized at Penuel Baptist church, Cwmafan, later joining the new branch at Tabor, where he was elected a deacon. His poetry is generally of a Biblical and ethical character. His early works were published in a volume entitled Fy Ngwanwyn (Aberdare, 1873), which was dedicated to his mother, Margaret Michael, and there subsequently appeared the Welsh words of Ruth a Naomi … A Cantata (Cwmafan, 1876) and Gwaredigaeth Pedr o'r Carchar (3rd ed., Cwmafan, 1885; 1st ed., 1879; 2nd ed., 1880). He also published, with Llewelyn Griffiths (Glan Afan), two anthologies of contemporary poetry under the titles of Blodeu'r Beirdd (Cwmafan, 1871), and Oriel y Beirdd (Cwmafan, 1882). He died 11 August 1913, leaving one daughter and four sons. Thomas Morgan (Afanwyson) was his nephew. He should not be confused with DAVID MICHAEL (1785 - 1860?), harpist, of Merthyr Tydfil.
