Born at Manchester 16 August 1798, son of William Ollivant of Manchester and Elizabeth his wife. He was educated at S. Paul's School, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he had an outstanding academic career. Elected Fellow of his college, he took his M.A. in 1824, and B.D. and D.D. in 1836. In 1827 he was elected vice-principal of S. David's College, Lampeter, and remained there till 1843.
For the next six years he was regius professor of divinity at Cambridge, and in 1849 he was appointed bishop of Llandaff, holding the see till his death at Llandaff on 16 December 1882. He was buried in the cathedral churchyard. He married Alicia, daughter of lieutenant-general Spencer of Branley Grange, Yorkshire, who, together with three sons, survived him. Ollivant put an end to the tradition of episcopal non-residence in Llandaff, restored the cathedral, built or restored 170 churches, and improved seventy parsonage houses in the diocese.
