OWENS, OWEN (1792 - 1862), Independent minister, and schoolmaster

Born at Maes Angharad, Dolgelley, 21 August 1792. He was admitted to membership of the church by Cadwaladr Jones at Dolgelley in 1811. He kept a school, first in his own neighbourhood and later at Dinas Mawddwy, where he began to preach. In 1821 he was ordained minister of Rhes-y-cae and Salem churches, Flintshire, where he spent the rest of his life. He died 13 October 1862, and was buried in Nannerch parish churchyard. At Rhes-y-cae he had a day-school to look after as well as his ministry; he worked hard to pay off the debts on the chapels and travelled considerably for this purpose. He was known as a ' sensible preacher ' and a ' moderate Calvinist. ' Considering his lack of opportunity he succeeded in attaining a considerable degree of culture; he wrote a great number of articles for the Dysgedydd and published Holwyddoreg yr Ymneillduwyr Protestanaidd, gan y Parch. S. Palmer a'i helaethu gan O. Owens, Rhesycae. He represents the finest type of minister to be found in the remote country districts in those days.
