He was a Norwich man, being the son of Thomas Phaer of that place, the family being probably of Flemish origin. He was educated at Oxford and Lincoln's Inn. On being appointed solicitor to the Council of the Marches, he settled at Kilgerran, Pembrokeshire, where he spent the rest of his life. He lies buried in Kilgerran church. He married Anne, daughter of Thomas Walter, of Carmarthen. He was the author of legal works, and, turning to the study of medicine, he published an English translation of Regimen Sanitatis Salerni. He is best known, however, for his translation of Virgil's ' Aeneid,' of which he completed nine books and part of the tenth.
