PHILLIPS, MORGAN (died 1570), Roman Catholic priest

Born in Monmouthshire. He matriculated at Oxford in 1533 and became so famous as a philosopher and disputant that he was called ' Morgan the Sophister.' He was elected Fellow of Oriel College, 1538, and was principal of S. Mary Hall 1546-50. He became precentor of S. Davids cathedral in 1553 but, shortly after Elizabeth's succession to the throne, fled to the Continent. In 1568 he was living at Douai with two other celebrated exiles, Dr. Owen Lewis and Dr. William Allen, and helped the latter to establish the famous college which trained Roman Catholic priests for the English mission field. He was an ardent supporter of Mary, Queen of Scots, and wrote the Defence of the Honour of Mary Queen of Scotland which was published at Douai in 1571. He died 18 August 1570.
