He was a native of Bryneglwys in Yale, and at one time lived at Bryn-y-llwynog, in the parish of Llandysilio, Denbighshire. He published an almanac regularly every year from 1739 to, at least, 1786. Its original name was Wybrenawl Genadwri, but in 1747 he changed it to Dehonglydd y Ser. Although the standard of the almanacs published by John Prys was beneath that of Gwilym Howell's almanacs, they included many original works, both prose and verse, of contemporary writers. He was interested in eisteddfodau, and we hear of him adjudicating at the Glynceiriog eisteddfod, 1743.
