According to notes in Peniarth MS 128 and Peniarth MS 139i Peniarth MS 139ii Peniarth MS 139iii he died in 1587. The date of his birth is not known, but in englynion, which he composed in 1587 on his sick bed, lines occur which may imply that he was then approaching 60 (see NLW MS 235D , f. 211). In Peniarth MS 128 his mother's name is given as Gwennhwyvar verch Ed. ap M'd, and his wife's name as Margred verch Ed. ap Rys. Fifteen of his children are named. In his genealogy he is referred to as Edward ap Roger ap John ap Elis Euthyn of Ruabon (see Peniarth MS 74 , Peniarth MS 128 , Peniarth MS 130 , Peniarth MS 139i Peniarth MS 139ii Peniarth MS 139iii , and others). This John ap Elis is said to have been the person of that name from Watstay, Denbighshire, who fought at Bosworth Field in 1485, and whose tomb can be seen in Ruabon church.

Peniarth MS 34 , Peniarth MS 128 , and B.M. Add. MS. 14967 were once in his possession. The last two manuscripts are known by his name and parts of them may be in his own hand. References to manuscripts in his possession can be seen in Peniarth MS 74 , Peniarth MS 132 , Peniarth MS 134 , Peniarth MS 135 , Peniarth MS 136 , and Peniarth MS 139i , Peniarth MS 139ii , Peniarth MS 139iii .
