DAVIES, HUGH EMYR (1878 - 1950), minister (Presb.) and poet

Born 31 May 1878 at Brynllaeth, Aber-erch, Caernarfonshire, son of Tudwal and Annie Davies. He was educated at Pwllheli county school, Clynnog School, U.C.W., Aberystwyth and Bala College. He was ordained in 1909, and was a minister at Llanddona, Anglesey (1909-12), Lodge, Brymbo and Ffrith (1912-20), and Llanfechell, Anglesey (1920-29). He was an exceptional preacher, but it was as a poet that he gained prominence. He won a chair at Pwllheli when he was 16 years old, and subsequently won 22 bardic chairs. He mastered the cynganeddion, but it was in the free metres that he excelled. His collected works were published in 1907 under the title Llwyn Hudol. His pryddest to ' Branwen ferch Llŷr ' won the crown at the Caernarfon national eisteddfod (1906); and his poem, ' Owain Glyndŵr ' won the crown at Llangollen (1908). He also won a chair at the American national eisteddfod in 1929. He adjudicated the competition for the crown many times at the national eisteddfod.

He married, 1910, Sydney Elizabeth Hughes of Bala, and they had a daughter. After retiring he lived at Holyhead and Menai Bridge. He died 21 November 1950 at Llandegfan.
