JONES, ELIZABETH JANE LOUIS (born ELIZABETH JANE LLOYD; 1889 - 1952), scholar

Born 28 April 1889 at Llanilar, Cardiganshire, only child of John Lloyd, timber merchant, and his wife Elizabeth (née Edwards). She received her early education at the County School, Aberystwyth and proceeded to the University College, Aberystwyth where she graduated in 1911 with first class honours in Welsh. She was awarded a Fellowship by the University and continued to study for a further three years, mostly in London and Oxford libraries. During her time in London she and her close friend Morfydd Llwyn Owen were assisted by Sir John Herbert Lewis and his wife, Ruth. In 1912 she won a prize and medal at Wrexham national eisteddfod for the principal essay on the history of the Eisteddfod. The following year she gained her M.A. degree for a thesis on this topic. She was appointed a lecturer in Welsh and English in 1916 at Bangor Normal College. In 1917 she married E. Louis Jones, a solicitor of Llanfyllin, son of Dr. Richard Jones, Harlech, and they had four children but two of them died young. In 1928 she published with Professor Henry Lewis, Mynegai i farddoniaeth y llawysgrifau (University of Wales Board of Celtic Studies, 1928). She died 14 May 1952 at Wrexham, and was buried at Llanfyllin.
