LLOYD, ISAAC SAMUEL ('Glan Rhyddallt ', 1875 - 1961); quarryman, poet and writer

Born 29 June 1875 at Tŷ Newydd, Clegyr, Llanberis (the original name of the house was Penrallt), the son of William Lloyd and his wife Mary Hughes. He was educated at Llanberis elementary school, but he had little opportunity for further schooling because his mother died when he was only eight years old and he worked, from that time until he was sixty, in the slate quarries. He married Margaret, daughter of John and Margaret Williams, in Llanrug Calvinistic Methodist chapel on 9 November 1894 and they had two sons and two daughters. After his marriage, he endeavoured to improve his cultural background through wide reading and mastering cynghanedd. He wrote hundreds of englynion and verses. The rank of a bard was conferred on him at the Llanelli national eisteddfod of 1903 and he took the name of ' Glan Rhyddallt ' in the Gorsedd. He was a weekly columnist with the Herald Cymraeg from 1931 until his death. Under the name of ' Mari Lewis ', his daughter had begun her column a year before her father. He corresponded on a regular basis with Welsh Americans and he wrote an account of Goronwy Owen, Goronwy'r Alltud (1947). He died at Gallt y Sil Hospital, Caernarfon, on 7 July 1961 and he was buried in the graveyard at Llanrug Church on 11 July.
