NICHOLSON, WILLIAM JOHN (1866 - 1943), minister (Congl.)

Born 23 December 1866, at 14 Vrondeg Street, Bangor, son of William Nicholson. He was admitted to the Memorial College at Brecon in 1886 and he spent the first year at the University College, Cardiff. In May 1889 he was ordained minister of St. Paul's Church Swansea. In 1892 he became minister of Salem church, Porthmadog, and remained there until 1940, when ill health and defective eyesight forced him to retire. He was chairman of the Welsh Congl. Union, 1929-30.

Inheriting many of his father's gifts as a preacher, he reached the front rank at an early age and maintained his popularity to the end. He was a preacher by instinct and did not involve himself to a great extent with matters outside his pulpit; he was a cultured student, and did not allow his gifts to become his master; he possessed a sense of humour which made him an outstanding character among his fellow ministers. He died 25 November 1943 at the age of 77 and was buried at Porthmadog.
