TOMLEY, JOHN EDWARD (1874 - 1951), solicitor

Born 3 February 1874 son of Robert Tomley and Esther (née Weaver), Montgomery. He was educated at Montgomery and Shrewsbury; he was articled to Charles S. Pryce, former town clerk at Montgomery, obtaining honours in the solicitors' final examination in 1901, and became a member of the local firm of Pryce, Tomley and Pryce. He served as clerk to numerous public administrative bodies in Montgomeryshire and Shropshire. In 1950 he was president of the Association of Clerks to the Executive Councils of Wales. He was an active member of many bodies associated with public health and insurance, e.g., a member of the governors, council and various committees of the Welsh National Memorial Association which was concerned with the prevention, treatment and abolition of tuberculosis. He took a prominent part in the inauguration of the Association of Welsh Insurance Committees, later becoming its president. He was also a member of the governing body of the Church in Wales. He was appointed a C.B.E. in 1920. His diverse interests are reflected in his published works: Place names (c. 1891), Forms of religious worship, The old age pensions act, The Castle of Montgomery (1923), The de-rating act (1928), and various statistical articles.

He married, 7 May 1902, Edith Florence Soley and had one son and two daughters. He lived at the Hollies, Montgomery, when he died 14 June 1951.
