Born in Morriston, Glamorganshire. He was ordained in 1851 as the minister of churches at Taihirion and Efail Isaf, Glamorganshire. He instituted a new church at Bronllwyn in 1858. He gave up the pastorate of Taihirion in 1893 and that of Bronllwyn shortly after. He died 16 September 1904. He remained the minister of Efail Isaf until the end of his life and was buried in the cemetery of Tabernacl, Efail Isaf.

Although John Davies was a prominent member of his denomination and one of the directors of the London Missionary Society, his influence was felt principally in his own region and he was known as Esgob y Fro (the bishop of the community). He was active in promoting education and mainly due to his efforts, a British school was set up at Llantwit Fardre and he was for many years a member of the board of Pentyrch school. He published Bras Llinelliad Hanesyddol o Gyfundeb Annibynol Dwyreiniol Morganwg in 1879.
