PHILLIPS, DANIEL (1826 - 1905), minister (Congl.) and lecturer

Born in 1826 at Swansea, Glamorganshire. He lost his parents when he was young. He went to work in Ebbw Vale, and in 1848, with about 50 other Welsh people, emigrated on the Georgia to U.S.A., arriving in New York in May and Pittsburg in June. He worked in Pittsburg for some time, preaching and preparing himself to enter college. In 1856 he graduated at Amherst College. He preached regularly among the Congregationalists from 1859 to 1894, serving his last ministry at Huntington, Mass. He was a powerful preacher and a very popular lecturer on themes relating to Wales, its history, customs, and, particularly, on the role of the Welsh in the development of U.S.A. Some of his lectures were published from time to time in The Cambrian. He spent his last years revising his lectures, and writing for Welsh and Welsh-American periodicals. He died in 1905.
