Born 8 October 1881 son of Richard Rees ('Maldwyn ', died 1927) and Jane (née Jones) his wife, of Medical Hall, Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire. He was educated at Machynlleth county school before becoming a bank clerk, and eventually manager of Barclay's Bank in Cardigan and later in Carmarthen (1926-40). On 8 December 1914 he married Frances Anne Rees, Goleufryn, Whitchurch, Glamorganshire, and died 24 April 1940, leaving two sons and a daughter. He was secretary of the Cardigan Cymrodorion Society which he founded and was a member of several other cultural societies. He was also secretary of Carmarthen national eisteddfod, 1911, and bearer of the sword of the Gorsedd of Bards from 1913 until 1940. He edited the Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire column in the Cardigan and Tivyside Advertiser for a period. In 1938 he was elected treasurer of the Welsh Bibliographical Society; he himself owned a good collection of old Welsh books and manuscripts.
