EVANS, WILLIAM (1779 - 1854), Wesleyan minister

Born 25 October 1779 at Caernarvon. His father died before he was born and the cost of his education at Beaumaris was borne by his mother's family - she came from Pant Hywel, Llandegfan. After having been a barber at Amlwch and Caernarvon, he became a minister in 1806. His circuits were as follows: Cardiff (1806), Llangollen (1807), Llanrwst (1809), Pwllheli (1810), Holywell (1812), Beaumaris (1814), Ruthin (1816), Llanfyllin (1818), Machynlleth (1821), Llanfaircaereinion (1824), Pwllheli (1826), Dolgelly 1828, Caernarvon (1831 - the year of the 'Little Wesley' trouble [see A. H. Williams, Welsh Wesleyan Methodism, chapter vii]), Llandysul (1832), Crickhowell (1835), Swansea (1837), Merthyr (1840), and Machynlleth (1843). He retired in 1844 and settled at Machynlleth, were he died 30 July 1854. He was the secretary of his province, 1812-24 and 1827-32, and editor of the Eurgrawn Wesleyaidd, 1824-5. He wrote Hanes Bywyd a Marwolaeth y Parch E. Jones, Bathafarn, 1850, and some 'controversial' books - Ymddiffynydd y Gwis, 1822; Traethawd yn erbyn yr Athrawiaeth o Barhad Diamoddol Mewn Gras, 1839; Amddiffyniad i Ddysgyblaeth y Methodistiaid Wesleyaidd, 1850, and others, Adam Evans, printer and publisher at Machynlleth, was his son.
